General Notes: Carl Gottlieb Christian Horn was born November 24, 1896 in Goldendale, Washington, to Rev Anton Karl and Margaretha Christiansen Horn. He was the first son after four daughters of ten children. The family lived in a very rural area just east of G oldendale in a rustic cabin which they owned. I think they bought the land and then built the rustic cabin. They and friends built the second one after a fire. This was before my dad was born. From the top of the hill one could view Mt Adams, Mt R ainier and what once there was Mt St. Helens. A fabulous sight. After about 5 years they moved to Endicott where he started school. They lived there until about the fall of 1903; then moved to Weber, Washington. They rented school land until abou t 1915, when Anton, the father died. They lived just on the county line of Douglas County, which is now Grant County, and Adams County. If they were in Adams county, the school was 1/2 mile away, but they had to go to Ruff school which was abou t 2 miles. They raised pigs, so some times they rode their pig part way home. The area was mostly sage brush so this is what they used for heat. Baking with sage brush gave a taste of sage brush. About 1909, his mother moved all nine children int o Odessa to go to school, they had lost one daughter when living in Goldendale. They attended school and did jobs after school to help with the family funds. My dad was 9 years old and he started working for Mr. Dobson in his butcher shop after sc hool. Here Carl learned the trade as a butcher and meat cutter, which he kept until 1954. He was about 12 years of age when we quit school to fully work for Mr. Dobson. The rest of the family would move back to the ranch in Weber for the summer , even after the death of Grozpapa Horn in 1915. The house in Odessa was on Alder Street and 3rd Ave and had two upstairs bedrooms. The boys had one and Grandma and the girls had the other. I was told that the 3 boys slept in one bed, with sometim es Chris sleeping crosswise at the foot of the bed. Chris said he got a better spot in the bed when Carl left for the service. I don't know what year Carl went to Davenport, Washington to work at the Banner Meat, where he worked for 15 years. I k now he was the reafter World War I as stated in the 1920 Federal Census for Lincoln County in Washington. He then went to the Davenport Grange Supply cutting me at from about 1943-1954; 1954-1961 he sold Relance Insurance, this involved travelin g the area, with Mom with him. He was a good talker. He and Mother were married April 11, 1921 in Odessa Washington. Her parents did not approve so they eloped to Odessa where it involved his brothers and sisters. They were married at the Odess a Lutheran Church Feelings must have changed as later they lived in the little white house beside Mother's parents in Davenport. Her parents had lived the rebefore they built the big red brick house on the next lot. My parents raised my older s isters. Beatrix and Dolores, there. In about 1927 they bought a two story house on 3rd and Marshall, where Carla was born in 1927, and I arrived into the picture in May 1931. We had three full lots and in the winter, some how Daddy, with someone' s consent, would hook a fire hose to the fire hydrant and flood our back vacant lot for our ice rink. He lighted the field so his girls and their friends and neighbors to ice skate. I do believe I remember seeing him on ice blades a few times. T hen come spring he would work so hard on the vacant lot leveling it with the roller for a croquet court which is played with wooden mallets and balls. There different friends and couples had their almost nightly games with the folks. I still hea r Daddy yelling at Mom when she knocked his ball out of play. It was a friendly game but at times the fur did fly. One time being Daddy's turn at play, and he was going to hit Mom's ball to the end of the field, when she grabbed his arm. Wha t a noise of pain came from him, as it was the arm that he had a very bad boil or carbuncle. They are terribly sore and draining relieves the soreness. Well this made it drain good. They still had it when Jack and I were going together in high sch ool as we also would play the folks at night. My Dad had very big fat hands, good butcher hands. He had such a firm grip that people knew when they had a hand shake from him. His hugs were as firm as his hand shake. Mary Knoll, the new Minister' s wife, but Dad knew Mary many years before she were married, was a victim of one of his hugs, with results of a cracked rib or two. Dad and Mother were both cremated and buried in the same grave at Mt View Cemetery in Davenporrt, Washington.

Chris A Horn, local boy turned adventurer, wrote a Christmas letter to L C Weik telling of a stay in NY City, where in an effort to make his money last as long as he could, he joined a soup line. His first attempt was fruitless whe n the soup ran out before his turn, the second also failed. The third time, after getting into line an hour early, he received a stale piece of bread and some thin soup. Feeling generous, he bestowed the food on the next man, and left to find hi s own sustenance. He is employed on a boat running from New York to Havana, and to Vera Cruz. He plans to return to his studies with the GE company.´´
