He grew up in Stevens Point and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Institute o f Paper Chemistry. Jack served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 on the USS Randolph. He was employed by Kimberly Clark, managing Research and Development in various laboratories, and was named their first Senior Research Scientist. Jack was a memb er of American Men of Science. From 1974 until his retirement in 1988, Jack was employed by Green Bay Packaging as Corporate Environmental Manager. In retirement he volunteered at the Outagamie County Historical Museum and at the Outagamie Count y Solid Waste Facility. Jack is survived by his wife, Doris. They met in 1943 as students at UW-Madison and enjoyed 68 years of marriage. He is also survived by a daughter, Nancy Jayne Schmalz (Peter), Oshkosh, WI, and sons Thomas Guthrie Jayne (L izz), Ashwaubenon, WI, and Brian Charles Jayne (Dorothy), Cleveland, WI. A brother and a sister also survive: Jerry Jayne (Anne), San Bruno, CA and Jan Lane, Grants Pass, OR. A fourth child, Claudia Jayne Calabrese (Mike), and a granddaughter, Reb ecca Elizabeth Jayne, are deceased. Jack is also survived by twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Classical music and travel, reading and bird-watching, were favorite activities for both Jack and Doris. They attended 36 Elderhostel s in the US and overseas, and were members of the Lawrence Academy New Horizons Band, in which Jack played flute. Jack's musical interests were evident during his school days, when he played both marimba and piano. Later he sang in his church choi r and in the MacDowell Chorus, as well as in Riverside Theater's production of The Most Happy Fella. Later still, Jack studied music theory at the Lawrence Conservatory and took lessons on both piano and flute. He was featured in Tremor Talk magaz ine, explaining how he adapted his flute so that he could play despite the tremor in his hands. A published poet, Jack couldn't pass up a good pun or a word he could turn into a limerick. He was an avid fan of Wisconsin Public Radio's classical mu sic programs, as well as their 12:30 quiz question, for which he regularly contributed answers and was occasionally a winner. Jack's family would like to thank the staff at St. Paul Villa, who provided warm friendship, comfort, and dedicated care.

Jack married Doris Ann Guthrie, daughter of Horace Kier Guthrie and Jennie Kingston Connell, on May 31, 1947 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA. Doris was born on January 10, 1926 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA and died on June 24, 2016 in Kaukauna, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA, at age 90.
